Indoor farming is more than a new agricultural production method. Through a local-for-local approach, it creates unique opportunities to align supply with demand. In practice, entirely new supply chains emerge in which local demand and supply are directly matched.

This alignment is not only quantitative, preventing shortages and surpluses, but also qualitative. The quality of crops can be tailored to local preferences and needs, exceeding the possibilities of traditional agriculture.

In addition to supply reliability and product safety, specific requirements will play an increasing role. This includes, for example, guaranteed levels of essential compounds in vegetables, herbs and fruits for specific applications and target groups.

Indoor farming will reshape traditional supply chains. It is a valuable addition to existing agriculture. Over time, it will – at least partly – replace both open-field and greenhouse production. A true disruptive innovation.
