the origins

We are Lianne and Gertjan Meeuws. Since 1989 we have worked on the scientific and technological foundations of controlled environment agriculture.

Our objective is clear: to enable reliable production of agricultural products — particularly food — without placing additional pressure on land, water, and natural ecosystems. This is achieved by growing crops in fully controlled cultivation systems.

Over several decades this work has developed into a coherent approach that connects plant biology, engineering, and practical cultivation experience.

Two organizations play a central role in this work. Seven Steps To Heaven develops the concepts, technologies, and practical applications for indoor farming. CERIN89 — the Controlled Environment Research Institute — focuses on the scientific foundation of the biological and technological principles behind these systems. Within this research, mathematical models serve as an important tool for understanding and improving plant performance.

The pages in Foundations describe the origins of this approach. They show how different developments came together, which people and ideas played a role, and how the history of this work led to the concept on which both Seven Steps To Heaven and CERIN89 are built today.
Our work has also contributed to the international discussion on indoor farming and controlled environment agriculture.
