There is a new form of agriculture.
One that returns land to nature instead of taking more and more of it. One that uses up to 95% less fresh water and produces crops without pesticides. One that gives crops exactly what they need to thrive.
This form of agriculture is known as indoor farming, vertical farming, plant factories with artificial lighting, or Controlled Environment Agriculture. The potential is large. Yet despite many initiatives, broad economic success has not yet emerged.
Analyses usually mention similar causes: systems that were too highly automated, crops with too little market value, and investment levels that were too high. More recently, high energy prices are also mentioned as an important constraint.
These factors play a role. However, in many of these analyses a decisive factor is missing: sufficient domain knowledge about plant growth and crop performance.
Indoor farming, like every form of modern agriculture, requires competence in technology, finance, and management. Above all, it requires the ability to understand and steer the biological processes that determine yield and quality.
Our analysis is that indoor farming only can be economically viable when yield and product quality are high enough to cover the costs of production. This requires a precise understanding of how the environment must be controlled to bring crops to optimal performance.
Understanding crop performance forms the foundation of our work. For that reason we prefer the term Controlled Environment Agriculture. The emphasis is on controlled.
